A Diesel Mechanic’s Approach to Lower Back Pain Relief. "Fix What’s Really Broken"

At The Miracle of Massage, Fix What’s Really Broken isn’t just a slogan — it’s a mindset.
It comes from my years as a diesel mechanic and millwright, where I learned that every problem has a cause, and if you don’t fix the cause, the problem will return.
It’s also rooted in Simon Sinek’s principle of “Start With Why” — the belief that true success and lasting change come when you begin with purpose. My why is simple: help people live without pain by finding and fixing the real mechanical issues in their bodies.
When a machine fails, you don’t just put tape over the warning light. You find the root cause, repair it, and get it running smoothly again. That’s exactly how I treat the human body — by finding and fixing the real problem, not just masking the pain.

Her Story: When Pain Took Over Her Life
A client I’ll call Mary came to me after years of debilitating lower back pain. This wasn’t just discomfort — it was life-altering.
Her right leg would sometimes collapse without warning, sending her crashing into walls or stumbling in public. She lived in constant fear of falling.
She had seen multiple doctors over the years. Each gave a different label:
Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD)
Arthritis
DDD with a side of Arthritis (an actual phrase from one doctor)
Spinal Stenosis
What is Spinal Stenosis?
Spinal Stenosis happens when the spaces in your spine narrow, squeezing or irritating the nerves that travel through the spine.
Common symptoms include:
Lower back pain
Numbness or tingling in the legs
Weakness or fatigue while walking
Legs “giving out” unexpectedly
The trouble is, most medical treatments stop at the diagnosis — but a diagnosis is just a label. It doesn’t always answer why the pain is happening.
Finding the Real Cause
When Mary came to me, I approached her situation like a mechanical breakdown.
I checked the “moving parts” — muscles, joints, and tissues — that keep the hips, pelvis, and spine working as a unit.
I found severe gluteal muscle dysfunction:
Simply stated, her butt muscles were not functioning as they should.
Her deep hip stabilizers were locked tight
Other muscles were weak and overworked
This imbalance put abnormal pressure on her lower spine, compressing nerves and mimicking spinal stenosis symptoms.
The Fix
I used targeted medical massage therapy to:
Release the locked muscles
Restore balance between her hips and spine
Improve circulation to the affected areas
After a series of treatments, her collapses stopped. She could walk without fear, shop for groceries without exhaustion, and finally enjoy life again.
Why This Works
The Fix What’s Really Broken approach works because it’s not about chasing symptoms. It’s about:
Identifying the true mechanical cause of the pain
Correcting muscle imbalances and tension patterns
Restoring natural movement without nerve compression
This is where Simon Sinek’s Start With Why fits in — my why is not “to give massages.” It’s to restore hope and mobility to people whose lives have been limited by pain.
If Your Lower Back Pain Hasn’t Gone Away…
If you’ve been told you have DDD, arthritis, stenosis, or some other diagnosis but you’re still in pain, don’t give up.
I’ve helped thousands of clients find relief by addressing the real cause of their pain.
